Especially in this age of globalization, different sports have become popular in places of the world where they were previously unknown. The result is that there is a demand for standardization in high-level sports. This way the playing field is leveled, in both the figurative and literal sense. Uneven natural pitches and courts suffering intense usage or external damaging factors, create risks when diving for the ball or going for a tackle. This brought about the creation of 2G, 3G and 4G pitches and courts.
What are 3G and 4G pitches and courts?
The term 3G is widespread in modern sports. The G stands for generation, e.g. 3G football pitches being the third generation of artificial football pitches. The previous generation pitches are still ideal for tennis courts, hockey pitches or multi-use games areas due to the short pile height. These 2G pitches, as they are called, are also part of our range of products and have been created up to standard of their respective authorities. However, when it comes to sports that are more physical, an extra degree of safety is required. We offer our clients the option to install their 3G or 4G pitches with a shock absorbent pad underneath. Moreover, the longer blades and mixed crumb infill of 3G pitches are softer when sliding or falling. However, a key difference between 3G and 4G pitches are the environmental factor. What sets 4G and 3G pitches apart is the use of infills. 4G pitches and courts don’t use infills at all, thus being a greener alternative. The issue for competitive sports is that 4G pitches have not yet passed the required safety tests, although they do adhere to regulations. Thus, 3G and 4G pitches and courts can be used for competitive and recreational areas respectively.
