The need for 3G rugby pitches

One of the oldest sports associations in England, rugby as we know it began in 1863.  Back then a collection of boarding schools decided upon a set of rules so that the game of rugby became somewhat regulated. However, in the century and a half since, the game has changed and become an international phenomenon. During this globalization the need for proper pitches that ensure safety and improved play have become vital. The demand for artificial standardization in high-level rugby arose due to uneven natural pitches caused by intense usage or external factors, creating risks when taking down opponents. This brought about the creation of 3G rugby pitches.

What are 3G rugby pitches?

The term 3G is widespread in modern sports. The G stands for generation, e.g. 3G rugby pitches being the third generation of artificial rugby pitches. The previous generation pitches are still ideal for tennis courts, hockey fields or multi-use games areas due to the short pile height. Especially with hockey pitches, the shorter pile height enables faster ball speed. However, when it comes to sports that require bringing down players, an extra degree of safety is highly advisable.  We offer our clients the option to install their 3G pitches with a shock absorbent pad underneath in order to increase on-pitch performances and softer landing after a tackle. Moreover, the longer blades and mixed crumb infill are softer when sliding or falling. For this reason, we advise 3g pitches to rugby clubs and soccer clubs. The pitches are also tailor made to your wishes. We have many options regarding blade height, density, and yarn shape.

Edel Grass at the cutting edge

From the point of view of governing bodies, 3G rugby pitches are the latest generation. We make this distinction because we have also been making strides in the realization of 4G projects. 4G pitches remove the need for infill entirely, making them a greener option and more comfortable. However, these pitches are yet to pass the safety and performance tests laid out by World Rugby. So, if you are looking to build a pitch to World Rugby Regulation 22 standard, you are required to construct a 3G rugby pitch.
