At soccer club EHS’85 from Emmen last Saturday, September 24, the “first biodegradable artificial turf field in the world” was officially opened by Emmer City Councilor Pascal Schrik. At the opening consortium partners, members of the club, parties in the synthetic turf sector, political stakeholders and the press were widely present.
Under the leadership of Senbis Polymer Innovations, also from Emmen, a consortium of specialist partners including Edel Grass, AnteaSport, Sweco and Ten Cate Grass, developed and produced this revolutionary pitch over the past two years. An outstanding achievement. The materials in this pitch such as the synthetic turf fibers and the backing, with which the final ‘GreenBlade‘ synthetic turf is produced, are fully compostable. The previously developed GreenFill performance infill material, with which the field was filled, is also fully biodegradable.
Succesfull collaboration
Years of research, development, and testing by Senbis and the consortium, as well as support from the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport via Sportinnovator and the government body for Dutch entrepreneurship, the province of Drenthe and the municipality of Emmen, ultimately made the realization of this field possible and successful.
A sustainable future
The field is the first of its kind and offers opportunities for further developments in the field of phasing out microplastics in artificial grass applications for sports and leisure.
