‘EnergieVeld’ for future proof
sport park development

Edel Grass is proud to be an integral partner within the ‘EnergieVeld’ (EnergyField) consortium, led by Finovi, selected for the Scale Up future proof synthetic sports fields initiative of the municipalities of Haarlem, Amsterdam and SRO (Sport, Recreation & Education).

For us this programme represents a timely opportunity to push the boundaries of sustainability and contribute to the transformation of sport parks into multifunctional community assets.

From the start our involvement has been shaped by a shared ambition. During the matchmaking events organised by the municipalities, it quickly became clear that the vision of Finovi, ACE Global, Oostendorp Nederland and Edel Grass aligned naturally.

The EnergieVeld consortium has since grown into a strong partnership, recognised through an EMVI (Economically Most Advantageous Tender or EMAT) proposal that was assessed as well founded, ambitious and innovative.

Field testing

In early 2026 the consortium will begin the prototype and research phase at sport park Ookmeer in Amsterdam. Several field variants will be built and monitored for twelve months. This data driven approach will allow the consortium to validate performance, assess environmental impact and determine which solutions advance to the next project stage.

Finovi contributes two core innovations. The collector field extracts heat from the synthetic turf to generate energy and reduce urban warming, while the climate control field applies evaporation to limit heating and reduce heat stress. These are site specific solutions that will be tested in parallel to establish their suitability for different environments.

A modular vision

The consortium does not aim to develop a single ideal field. Instead, it strives to create modular sport parks that can combine energy functions, water systems, cooling, storage and community facilities

ACE Global supports this ambition with the layer cake system which elevates the field surface to create space below for energy storage and other applications. A digital twin environment is used to simulate and test these technologies before they are applied on site.

Edel Grass contribution

Circularity is a guiding principle within Energyfield. Edel Grass brings its Post-to-Play™ and Turf-to-Turf™ systems which use more than fifty percent recycled plastic in its fibres and incorporate high levels of end-of-life turf in the coating.

Other components such as subbase layers, piping and retention crates are selected for recycled or reusable content wherever possible. The aim is to maximise future reusability across the entire construction.

Smarter sport parks

Oostendorp Nederland contributes its Ralph smart city management system which brings together data on water, energy, lighting and weather forecasts.

This integrated platform enables continuous monitoring of field performance and supports the optimisation of energy and water flows across the park.

Collaboration driver

The tender structure encourages cooperation not only within each consortium but also between consortia.

This collaborative approach can lead to shared equipment, shared logistics hubs and exchange of materials. The first project year will focus strongly on aligning working methods, setting common principles and reducing failure costs across the chain.

Scalable innovations

Interest in the EnergieVeld approach has been significant since the official launch. Other municipalities are following the developments closely. The solutions created within Scale Up are not exclusive to the participating cities and may be applied across the Netherlands or internationally.

With support from European LIFE funding , the consortium aims to deliver scalable and affordable innovations that strengthen the transition to sustainable sport park infrastructure.

Edel Grass Product Manager & Scale Up responsible manager Gijs Peters: “Edel Grass values its role within the EnergieVeld consortium and remains committed to advancing the performance, circularity and societal impact of future sport parks.”
