New Edel Grass football pitch at Soccer Experience Batu Kawan
In Batu Kawan, Penang, a new artificial turf football pitch is helping to grow the game at community level. Located next to IKEA Batu Kawan and developed as an initiative partnership with IKEA, the facility forms part of Soccer Experience Batu Kawan. The project focuses on making football more accessible for local players while supporting the long-term development of the sport in Malaysia.
The pitch introduces a modern playing surface that allows the community to play football throughout the year in consistent conditions. The facility is already becoming a gathering place for players of all ages who are eager to train, play matches and simply enjoy the game.
An initiative to promote football development
Soccer Experience Batu Kawan was created with a clear mission; to stimulate football participation and development in Malaysia. The initiative aims to encourage both boys and girls to get involved in the sport and to provide a safe, accessible environment where players can improve their skills.
Beyond local participation, the organisers also hope to attract international training camps to Malaysia in the future. By creating a high-quality football environment, the project seeks to build connections between local football communities and international teams, strengthening the development of the sport in the region.
From permitting challenges to rapid construction
Although the installation itself progressed quickly, the project first faced challenges during the permitting process. Discussions around parking requirements caused delays before final approval could be granted for the development. Once the permits were secured, construction moved forward rapidly, and the pitch was completed within a short timeframe.
The project was carried out by Eco Outdoor Malaysia, who oversaw both the construction and installation of the field.
High-performance artificial turf system
The field was built using an Edel Diamondblade artificial turf system. The surface features a 60 mm pile height turf, installed on a crushed stone sub-base and filled with a combination of sand and rubber granulate infill. This is a proven and durable configuration providing stability and consistent playing characteristics to support intense use and lots of training sessions.
The system ensures reliable performance while maintaining the comfort and resilience required for both recreational and organised football activities.
A new community football hub
Before the construction of this pitch, the site did not offer any football facilities. Today the field has quickly become an active meeting place where local residents gather regularly to play.
Thanks to the new artificial turf pitch, players in Batu Kawan now have access to a reliable and high-quality surface that allows them to play more often and develop their skills. With Soccer Experience Batu Kawan continuing to expand its activities, the facility is expected to play an important role in strengthening the local football culture for years to come.
